Our History
For more than 39 years, St. Albert Family Resource Centre has been a leader in providing prevention and early intervention services and supports to families in St. Albert. The organization was founded in 1982 by Shelley Langford, Joan Monson, and Marlene Wynnychuk, who worked within the counselling and parent education field. It was called the Society for Education and Support for Parents.
In 1984, the research group and an interested group of parents expanded to form the nonprofit Society for Education and Support of Parents. Initially, courses and programs were part-time in a classroom. Later that same year, the Executive identified the need for a permanent facility, allowing expansion and integration of services to the community.
In 1991 the Executive changed its name to St. Albert Parents’ Place Association. The Association experienced substantial growth over the years and was able to offer more programs to the community. The acquisition of new funding streams made this possible.
In 2003, Parents’ Place Association joined two other charitable organizations and moved to a new location in Campbell Business Park. The building was called the Charles Gale Centre and managed by the Charles Gale Society. The innovative partnership ensured a fixed rent for fifteen years. We continue to reside in the building and value our strong relationship with the Charles Gale Society and the other charitable organizations.
The reach of Parents’ Place continued to grow. Programs and services strengthened parent’s knowledge of child development through early childhood programming, home visitation, and community outreach programs. In 2011, the name was changed to what it is today, St. Albert Family Resource Centre.
St. Albert Family Resource Centre continues to offer prevention, and early intervention supports aimed at reducing the impacts of early adversity by promoting the well-being and resiliency of all family members. The majority of our programs are free due to the financial support of our funders. As a provincial Family Resource Network member, we have expanded our reach to include families with children up to 17 years. Today, the organization provides early childhood programming, child and youth programs, home visitation, family support, parent education classes, community information, referral, and coordination services.
